species:artither

Artither is a Sehto-specific unique pokémon of type Flying and Ice that evolves to Articuno when befriended.

It's roughly palm-sized bird with soft white feathers that possess iridescence. It's cold to the touch, which might on superficial inspection grant one the impression it's dead when it's really just asleep. Its eyes are a clear blue and scaled feet and beak a light grey.

Being a (pre-)Legendary, Artither does not formally have a gender, though the individual instances will be wired the one or other way (though presumably wholly infertile), allowing the use of gender pronouns for them.

Artither is weaker than Articuno by a large margin, but still a capable pokémon to have in one's team.

Possible Moves

Bold indicates moves that receive the same-type attack bonus.

'Level-up', with level indicators for those who'd rather not do a freeform run:

  • 00: Gust
  • 00: Powder Snow
  • 07: Tackle
  • 13: Mist
  • 18: Peck
  • 22: Wing Attack
  • 25: Agility
  • 30: Endure
  • 37: Mind Reader
  • 49: Ice Beam
  • 61: Reflect
  • 73: Blizzard

Other than the slight deviation from Articuno's level-up moves, moveset behaviour is identical. This means: There are no breed-only moves because the species cannot procreate (normally) and tutoring and TMs/HMs behave as in Articuno.

Relationship with Articuno

The specific mythology of Artither and Articuno can vary from Sehto run to Sehto run, but if one wants to maintain the uniqueness of the species, there are really only two versions that work out: Either Artither and Articuno count as the same 'unique species' and Artither is a reborn Articuno after the Legendary bird is brought to fall, ensuring its continued existence - or an instance of Articuno and Artither exist at any given time, and the evolution of Artither into Articuno prompts an instinct to battle for supremacy in a way that inevitably ends in one party's death (and the creation of another Artither to later do the same), like an inverse phoenix mythology.

This holds true for the other Kanto Legendary prevolutions.

How the Kanto Legendaries came to Sehto is a different topic. The usual explanation in the rough is that they're simply a unique species native to Sehto, spawning there as their prevolutions, usually migrating to Kanto after maturation.
