It's not an actual magma chamber, of course - it's mostly filled with air, just the bottom of the gym is covered in a layer of lava. It's a deliberately hazardous environment for pokébattles, though the actual fatality rate of pokémon is extremely low, since pokémon are commonly withdrawn from the battlefield in time by their trainers if they fall off the platforms.
