character:naomi-charna

Naomi Charna is the Nightclaw gym leader and responsible for the Glint Badge. She specialises in Dark and Steel pokémon. At 23 years of age, she's fairly young and a fairly recent addition to the gymleader line-up, both, and did not witness Dakarai N'Sehla's gym circuit run (though this does nothing to soften her opinion of him).

Personality

Naomi is, in a phrase, meticulously polite. She tries her best to be helpful to trainers that come to her gym, whether it is for battle or the care of their pokémon. Sarcasm, while not entirely foreign to her, does not always register, and flippantly asked questions are almost always answered in earnest. Her pattern of speech is very precise, and occasionally, she can be heard over-pronouncing some syllables and trailing consonants, suggesting English may not be her native language.

Toward battle-prone pokémon trainers her manner is exactly as superficial as one might suspect - she resents them to a similar degree that Terry Kiran openly exhibits, but she's much less inclined to admit anything for the sort. It does show in her attitude toward Dakarai N'Sehla, though.

Naomi has little tolerance for pranks of any sort, though while she's quick to adopt a stern tone of it, she'll forgive someone who shows remorse very quickly. In general, she's not prone to keeping any grudges in regards to regular human beings, regardless of their transgression, with one exception: Pathological sadism is nothing she can stomach, and anything that strikes her as the result of that will upset her deeply and get under her skin. She has a firm firm grasp of fairness, but overdoes it occasionally, in the sense that she applies it to situations where it simply isn't necessary (such as with friendly pranks). Generally, one might consider her rather humourless, though not to point of being easily offended - she just won't likely laugh, and the facial expression she might present if the subject of a joke is so coldly polite that it's made people uneasy before.

Naomi behaves respectfully around anyone she meets, though her friendly exterior is skin-deep when it comes to people outside her social circle. To her credit, the aforementioned trainers notwithstanding, it quickly warms to genuine kindness unless she's given a reason not to - she's not misanthropic by a long shot and quite enjoys expanding her collection of friendships (as Nightclaw's culture is prone to encourage).

Sexuality

Sexuality

Naomi is quite dominant in private and has a mild sadistic streak - something that might strike an onlooker as ironic given her aversion to harm in her fellow human beings until one comes to understand just how pivotal consent is for her. As far as gender-preference goes, she can be considered a bi-curious lesbian, and her dominance and sadism tends to be more pronounced around males; fellow ladies can get away with switching on her.

Opinions

Naomi Charna loathes Dakarai N'Sehla - a feeling that is entirely mutual. She'd be hard-pressed not to not-so-politely ask him to leave - expletives may not be on the menu, but it's self-evident when she's full of scorn. Her cause to resent him above all other trainers is, of course, because he 'cheated death', and she feels he's been given special treatment he doesn't deserve in being allowed to live.

She respects Jagdish Tsukinaka, though she's unlikely to go as far as risk her life for him.

Loyalties and Animosities in brief

Ordered roughly from positive to negative, Naomi…

  • …is quite entrenched with her social circle and would do anything short of break the law for any of them (and it's a large circle).
  • …cherishes her own pokémon and pampers them, although always with the thought in mind that they need to be able to effortlessly win a gym battle for her - effortlessly so they don't get harmed much in the process.
  • …respects pokémon in general, finding them all quite lovely, even the ones with attitude problems.
  • …has a strong sense of responsibility toward the Nightclaw inhabitants and wishes them no harm, in part considering the occasional crimes they get up to toward each other like a mother would consider a misbehaving child - with frustration and some disbelief, though she mops the resulting mess up with minimal outward emotion.
  • …respects her fellow gym leaders including Jagdish Tsukinaka as equals whose advice she's happy to accept.
  • …respects the Legendaries but finds herself sometimes a bit perturbed by that they deem it fit for themselves to judge human beings as they do, though it's not nearly enough of an issue for her to want to do anything against it - mostly, it just registers as strange to her gut.
  • …regards the rest of Sehto with some suspicion, but no inherent malice.
  • …resents battle-prone pokémon trainers, though it doesn't normally outwardly show - but she'll coldly keep tally of their missteps and keep the worst grudges toward them.
  • …considers Dakarai N'Sehla the utterly worst human being and believes he cheated death and has done everything to deserve the worst possible treatment.

Role as Gym Leader

Naomi's role as the Nightclaw gym leader invites a strange medley of disregard and protectiveness in her. She loves her city and she has zero tolerance toward anyone who would harm another on its territory - one that she decidedly does not consider her own. Generally, she considers herself remarkably unlike a leader, despite being the formal head of the police force and first judge, simply considering it a job like any other. She certainly takes it seriously, but her local social circle demands more of her attention. She does not particularly care to be the best possible person at her job ('just' good and fair), and does not struggle with wrong decisions. Despite her lack of care for wrong decisions after the fact, she's rarely known to make them - she's just painfully unapologetic when they do occur (in the sense that while she might certainly say say sorry, she won't feel sorry in the least).

Gym Rules

Naomi fights in the dark, though it differs from Sehto run to Sehto run whether she allows the dark to be dispelled or if such moves result in a disqualification. It's of course more exciting for the darkness to be mandatory.

History

Naomi was born in Nightclaw West to parents who'd come to Sehto from Johto. It's from that that she had a predisposition not only for pokémon battling, but for Dark and Steel types as well. Interestingly enough, her parents actually discouraged the practise after coming to realise the Sehtoan stance on the matter, but she took a liking to the foreign stance, considering Johto 'much less stuck up about pokémon battling', and went on to do the gym circuit once she'd lived on her own and made just enough money to survive for a few months without making any more.

Needless to say, Taqnateh made it exceptionally clear to her that her deviation from that particular norm is a bad idea - for reasons she simply hadn't considered, given the household she grew up with. Much like Yarver Bakema, she considered the ruling just, horrifying or not, though she's in Keith Sirius' camp of simply pretending in retrospect that none of it happened. The encounter left her distraught for a few months that she spent trying to find herself again, and she concluded it with a (rather frightened) trek back up to Taqnateh to speak to Jagdish about pokémon philosophy.

It's that trek that ultimately got her her gym leader position and enough peace with herself to be self-confident once more - though she's taken a rather venomous attitude toward circuiting pokémon trainers out of it.

Appearance

Naomi is of the rare type of woman that still wears a dress on nearly all occasions, which is normally the first thing people notice about her. She has a penchant for the dramatic in regards to her attire, even for casual occasions, and her wardrobe consists in majority of clothes that make her look drop-dead gorgeous… essentially excepting a raincoat and some hiking clothes for when her friends drag her over to Valcee Cave. That being said, she has no issues getting her clothes dirty - she has enough of them that she takes equal joy out of that it's simply a temporary issue, and everything she owns can be washed easily enough, so she'll have no issue getting sand on the edges of her gown while walking on the beach or the likes thereof.

She has naturally blond, flowing hair that reaches down to the small of her back, which she keeps a broad black streak in. The hair colour has a certain complexity to it, in that due to individual, naturally darker strands mingling into the entire picture, it easily soaks up the warm hues from any light source, resulting in a fairly reddish, coppery appearance under some circumstances, something she certainly puts to use in her gym. Her eyes are a dark amber and her complexion pale. If vampires were an actual thing, she'd want to be one, that much is certain - and given her hang-out is the Helix Tower, doubling as an event venue as it does in a nocturnal city, that predisposition is only catered to. Her friends certainly consider her something of a vampire, even if it's largely in jest.

Descriptions from Sessions

Collected from Arsaga:

[The light reveals] a surprisingly pleasant and young looking girl, clad in what seems to be a flowing gown - a dress. A girl, wearing a dress. That was getting rare. She smiles warmly at the group. “Welcome to the Nightclaw pokégym,” she says. “Have you come to battle?” Her voice is quiet, friendly, inviting, and her smile is evidently genuine, exuding a strange, almost alien warmth out from this darkness that's otherwise settled on the area, and that the orange sphere is only locally scattering.

She seems to have dark hair, but it's hard to tell in this light what colour, precisely - it's not black. It could be anything ranging from a regular red over copper to maroon and brown, but all that's clear right now is that it has a slight wave to it and is long. Her eyes have been shadowed with some red-ish colour, and her lips, though delicate, are decorated with much the same hue. Her eyes aren't open quite fully, instead hinting at half-closed, and she looks a bit as though she might purr, her hands set onto the glowing orb. Her gown, too, does not seem to be black, the two colours silver and what is presumably wine red in normal light. Her smile twitches into a light but benevolent smirk. “Who wishes to battle first?” she asks, simply.

The strange girl nods quietly. “It's amicable that you have come to an agreement.” And, to Marcus: “My name is Naomi Charna. You may choose how many pokémon you wish to battle with - any amount between one and four. The battles will be one-on-one battles, with a K.O. or death meaning a loss, though you are free to withdraw your pokémon if their fate is inevitable. Objections?”

She smiles across at Marcus and acknowledges his choice with a simple nod. “Please, step over here,” she says, patting the light source, beckonning him simply, without allure to her voice, but quite clear that it's a requirement to get anywhere.

“Thank you,” she says, simply, and while her tone is friendly, it is almost too friendly, like some computer recording of someone's voice meant to be kind and soothing even in the bizarrest situations. She steps back, and without warning, the light extinguishes, letting the darkness descend upon Marcus again. Silence, for long moments - then, from further away: “You may call your first pokémon, as I will call mine.” After a brief pause: “Sadza!” Other than a brief outline of something, nothing is visible. Wait, is she planning to conduct this without any sort of light? How is that supposed to be sane?

Her right hand is set on it's head, scritching gently. “Please take this as the neutral observation it is, good sir: You are a lousy trainer.” - Marcus narrows his eyes. “Can I ask what advice you have for me then?” His tone is cold, nasty. - “I will give you advice when the others have battled. They are not meant to profit from your mistakes,” she says, inclining her head and nodding gently, once, still smiling. “Please, though, remind me when we are done, and I will gladly give you pointers.” She bows her head slightly, curls of hair falling across her shoulders, beautifully.

“Losing is never easy, there is no need to apologise. In the end of the day, it's what we learn from it.” This said, she inclines her head, smiles again, and she drifts back from the globe of light, it extinguishing once more. Darkness descends, it's absolute grip on the arena effortlessly spreading unease.

“I am not fond of deaths, myself, but know there are things far worse than death,” Naomi says, ignoring Marcus' words. “I would rather you did not fight to avoid injury, rather than use death as an excuse to withdraw early.” A brow quirks lightly.

Fortunately, Naomi, much like her pokémon, is mainly nocturnal, typically rising a handful of hours past noon, herself, working in her gym more or less until sunrise.

The view from Helix Tower was breathtaking as usual, and Naomi, dressed as though she were the bride in a particularly Victorian marriage, provided a sharp contrast to the modern designs - yet, at the same time, up here on the top platform with the expanse of the city stretched out below them, she seemed to be meant for this place.
